Coming from Los Angeles, I was very lucky to be invited for the first time to the Windy City to attend the annual extravaganza that is 'International Mr. Leather'.
Gay Pride Celebrations started with the first parade in Los Angeles...

Organization:
Together We Can
Gay Men   Lesbian Women   Bisexual   Transgender

The GLBTQ community takes care of it’s own and there is no finer example of this principle in action than a GLBTQ organization named Together We Can (TWC). Life can be difficult and sometimes it takes us places that we would rather not go. TWC is an organization where GLBTQ men and women struggling with addiction problems can find help, comfort, and aid from their peers.

TWC’s stated goal is “to provide educational opportunities on substance abuse issues to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and allied communities.” TWC accomplishes this goal by providing information where people can find meetings dedicated to overcoming substance abuse problems, sponsoring an annual conference, and sponsoring numerous GLBTQ social events.

One of the principal ways TWC assists the GLBTQ community is by providing lists of meetings where people seeking help with addiction problems can find help. TWC provides meeting lists for Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Codependents Anonymous, and Sexual Compulsive Anonymous. These organizations are twelve-step meetings where people recovering from addiction problems assist people suffering from addiction problems. Members of these meetings share their strength, hope, and experience with one another and overcome their addiction problems by finding a new way to live their lives.

Another very special way TWC assists the GLBTQ community is by sponsoring an annual conference at a Metropolitan Detroit hotel. Every year people in recovery come together at these conferences and share their growth and recovery experiences. A typical conference includes open meetings where speakers describe their recovery experience, workshops on various recovery topics, recovery themed entertainment, and social opportunities including a dinner dance, pool party, and Sunday brunch.

Knowing that it is important for people in recovery to have sober social events, TWC typically sponsors six GLBTQ social events each year. There are monthly events beginning in September and running through February. The social events often include: a games night, a progressive dinner, a pancake breakfast, an evening of bowling, and dances on Halloween, New Years Eve, and Valentines Day. All of the social events are smoke, alcohol and drug free. Current information regarding upcoming events and conferences can be found on the Together We Can website www.twcdetroit.org

An important principal behind TWC is; you do not have to face your addiction problem alone. Others have faced and overcome addiction problems by reaching out for help and understanding from their peers. There are GLBTQ people waiting to share their strength, hope, and experience with you.   You can find help, love, and understanding by contacting the people of the organizations listed on the TWC website.
